The Kia Sedona was first launched in September 1998 in numerous global markets. For years in Korea, it was known as the Kia Carnival, but  in the USA and Canada it is known as the Sedona. The initial Sedonas were spacious and well-built with a strong engine, though it carried 400-700 pounds compared to competitors. Still, it was Kia’s top-selling vehicle when it launched and was the top-selling minivan in Australia in 2001, 2004, and 2005, setting a few sales records in that time.

The 2nd-generation Sedona came along in 2006 with a much lighter version comparable to the field of minivans. A lighter engine, transmission, and rear suspension, with better use of high-tensile steel brought the Sedona down 400 pounds. Along with extra horsepower and the Kia Sedona suddenly became everything you needed in a family minivan to go along with build quality, crash test scores, passenger comfort, and storage space. A June getaway weekend at a cottage on Lake Huron has become an annual tradition for our families. This year, since one of the kids couldn’t make it, driving up in single vehicle became a viable option for the first time. ‘What a great excuse to test a large vehicle,’ I thought to myself, and I promptly secured a Kia Sedona minivan to put through its paces.

Bestie finds out, and she ends up being not at all pleased. I can feel her anxiety seeping through her messages. It might not be what I have in mind, she says. Her partner is six-foot-four and will probably have to sit shotgun, so she’ll end up in the back. There will be none of the sing-alongs and merriment that we typically enjoy. It will be a bust of a road trip.
