What does WRX STI even mean?
In the 1990s, the Prodrive Racing Team from Britain, teamed with Subaru to create a rally car based on the Subaru Impreza. WRX, is the acronym created for the name World Rally eXperimental, which emerged from their collaboration. The WRX came about from enhancing many of the Impreza’s driving capabilities including a turbocharged engine, all wheel drive, and a stiffer suspension along with rally-racing goodies such as enhanced dashboard with RPM gauge, racing gear knobs, pedals and of course, the racing gloves!
On 27 January 1984, Prodrive competed in and won its first ever event, the Qatar International Rally, the first round on the inaugural FIA Middle East Rally Championship. The Porsche 911 SC RS driven by local Qatari driver Saeed Al Hajri went on to win the 1984 MERC, while Henri Toivonen campaigned the same car in the European Rally Championship.
Subaru WRX STI
The same team that worked with Prodrive to modify the Impreza into becoming the WRX… created Subaru Tecnica International, better known as STI. This is the motorsports division of Fuji Heavy Industries. STI is the dedicated performance division of Subaru designing performance-tuned upgrades including engines, transmissions, suspensions and more.
Subaru Tecnica International (in Japanese: スバルテクニカインターナショナル株式会社, Subaru Tekunika Intānashonaru Kabushiki-gaisha), or STI (prior to 2006, STi), is Subaru Corporation’s motorsports division. STI, along with Prodrive of the UK, specialized in the preparation of a variety of vehicles for the Subaru World Rally Team which competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Beginning back in 2002, North America was introduced to the Subaru Impreza WRX – some say the acronym stands for “World Rally Experimental” – basically a somewhat souped version of what was a fairly humdrum commuter sedan with all-wheel drive, stiffened suspension, and turbocharged engines.
