The BMW X5 brought BMW with its first crossover vehicle during the 2000 model year. Produced in Spartanburg, South Carolina the BMW X5 sport activity vehicle is a high-end luxury crossover, standard features such as traction control and self-leveling suspension was included on the 2000 BMW X5.

The BMW X5 was introduced with a 4.4-liter V-8 engine generating 282 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. And in in 2001 a 3.0-liter inline-six engine was added, giving the X5 a more fuel-efficient option. The X5 shared the car platform used for the 5 Series sedan initially, but incorporated AWD control systems found on Land Rover products.

In 2002, BMW brought out a third engine, the 340-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8. In 2007, a larger BMW X5 crossover was further refined when the iDrive controller became standard. The 2007 BMW X5 also expanded its interior giving comfortable seating for up to seven passengers.

For 2009, a diesel engine model of the crossover vehicle was offered for the first time while 2010 brought electronic features such as Active Steering, four-zone climate control and heads-up display.

A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six generating 300 horsepower replaced the naturally aspirated engine base engine in 2011. The 2014 model year BMW X5 received styling and engineering enhancements. The entire 2014 BMW X5 line-up channels power through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
